As of August 19th 2024, obtaining a European Certificate of Succession (ECS), established by Regulation (EU) no. 650/2012 of July 4th 2012, has become easier and faster. Under the protocol signed between the Ministry of Justice, through the Institute of Registries and Notaries, and the Order of Notaries, it is now possible to apply for the ECS at any notary’s office in Portugal and, starting in September, it will also be possible to apply for it online, in order to simplify succession processes involving several EU jurisdictions.
